Jarvis efficiently delivers country-wide Christmas rail projects
20/01/2006
Jarvis Rail completed 11 major renewals and commissioning projects across England and Scotland
during the Christmas period.Working around the clock, the team started work just as most other people were clocking off for
Christmas. Projects included signalling commissioning, OHL contact wire renewal, plain line renewal
and switch heating installation and commissioning. “The Jarvis team focused on safely and cost-effectively completing the works for our customer,
Network Rail, and performed outstandingly, particularly considering the freezing conditions in Scotland
and the snowfall in Yorkshire,” said Pat McHale, Jarvis Rail Managing Director. “Extensive planning and preparation went into the delivery of these Christmas track renewal and S&C
projects and the success of the works is really due to all the effort put in beforehand. “Integral to our success was our close collaboration with Network Rail on possession times, access
and equipment.” The work undertaken included the Doncaster Station - Sheffield Ladder S&C renewals project, which
took place from Christmas Eve to New Year’s Eve. It comprised approximately 745 people working
across 22 shifts, on six point ends on the East Coast Main Line. The work included the entire renewal
of Permanent Way, signalling and switch heating with OHL adjustments. The Doncaster team, led by project manager Andy Blakeley, completed the work in a 154 hour
possession, during which the station at Doncaster was closed for a 59 hour period over Christmas Day
and Boxing Day. The remaining 95 hours required the team working alongside operational train
services at the station. Project Manager Andy Blakeley said: “To maximise our efficiency, reduce risk and ensure Network
Rail was able to return to line speed quickly, we pre-assembled the layout into 11 new track panels
and carried out 52 welds ahead of the possession. That left 64 welds to de done during the
possession. By completing work ahead of the possession we were able to check to ensure the panels
and welds were defect-free before installation.” Across the East Coast, the team completed a total 4,309 composite metres of plain line, accident-free,
at Marsh Lane, Cargo Fleet and Doncaster Station – Sheffield Ladder. Elsewhere, in Scotland the OHL team completed 2,500m of contact wire renewed in High Street and
Queen Street Low Level Tunnels, in the Glasgow north and south electrics project. The work at
Polmont Junction included track circuit conversion for a signalling commissioning at Greenhill and
S&C renewal with six number ends of S&C renewal/remodelling and 470 yards formation and plain
line renewal. Major works completed included:
- Wigan Springs Branch – signalling commissioning stage six
