Network Rail awards Jarvis £3.7m Durham coast signalling renewals project
14/08/2006
Network Rail has awarded a £3.7m signalling infrastructure renewal project to Jarvis Rail’s Electrical Projects Group (EPG) on lines that run adjacent to the County Durham coast.Initially Jarvis’ EPG will carry out a (signalling) interlocking renewal project on the Durham coast route that runs from Northallerton to Newcastle (via Hartlepool), with further signalling renewals planned on the line between Stranton to Hall Dene. Stuart Birch, Jarvis Rail’s MD Electrical Projects Group said: “We are very pleased to have been appointed to handle the Durham Coast renewals project. Our EPG has a great deal of experience and expertise which allows us to provide outstanding levels of service delivery. By determining the scope of this project in terms of safety, cost effectiveness and time efficiency we have been able to provide Network Rail with the ideal solution.” Network Rail has divided the Durham Coast contract – which commenced in June - into four distinct stages to allow the efficient roll out of the project. The first stage being undertaken is signalling renewal at Cliff House on four miles of the 22 mile long Greatham to Sunderland line. It will include the decommissioning of the Cliff House signal box with control being transferred to Greatham. This will involve the renewal of ten straight post signals and approximately 30 location cabinets. Up to 6000m of troughing will also be carried out along with all the necessary telecommunications, civil engineering and mechanical and electrical engineering works. The Greatham to Sunderland line comprises two-track railway with an additional down goods loop with an approximate length of half a mile and an up goods loop of around one and a half miles. EPG will recover redundant sidings and make entry and exit to the up goods loop possible should future capacity require it. The Durham Coast project is due for completion in 2009 with the first element being complete in late 2007.
