Green light for Jarvis Rail Electrical Projects

06/06/2006

Jarvis Rail’s Electrical Projects Group (EPG) has a number of projects underway for its customer Network Rail.

Following the submission of a series of successful tenders, the Jarvis team was appointed to undertake activities ranging from signalling upgrades to implementing a new line speed profile. One of the projects has been successfully completed, with a remaining four either underway or being started over the course of the next six months. The projects complement significant other work being undertaken by Jarvis Rail and its sister company, Fastline, across the UK.

Jarvis Rail and Fastline Group Managing Director Mike Houghton said: “These multiple projects are testimony to the ability and dedication of everyone at Jarvis Rail and especially those within the specialist Electrical Projects Group. Our commitment to providing the highest levels of service delivery across the business ensures that our customers receive safe, efficient and effective solutions.”

Details of some of the individual projects are as follows:

Completed project

Greenhill – Power supply renewal
The important Edinburgh to Glasgow lines between Greenhill Junction Relay Room and Polmont have had their 650v power supply cables fully renewed.

EPG carried out the renewal project to combat the effects of aging and mechanical damage caused by deteriorating cable insulation. The project is considered a great success and has safeguarded the power supplies for this high profile route between Scotland’s most prominent cities.

New projects

Doncaster – ‘Double cutting’
The double cutting project will involve upgrading the circuit design between Doncaster and Wrawby from the current single cut to double cut.

Wire degradation will be removed and earthing problems eliminated to improve the integrity of the operational equipment. This will dramatically reduce the risk of wrongside failure compared to its existing state.

Brough – Signal box and level crossing renewal
EPG will renew the electro-mechanical interlocking signal box and level crossing scheme at Brough East on the Broomfleet to Hessle section of the Neville Hill East Junction to Hull line.

A ‘data logger’ will be installed to monitor the interlocking control circuitry and allow on-site and remote incident investigation and fault-finding. The interlocking will also be located within a purpose-built brick relay room at Brough East Signal Box.

Starbeck – Signalling upgrade
Starbeck Signal Box is located on the York to Harrogate line, and a signalling upgrade is required in the Starbeck Control Area to provide it with colour light signals.

The current motor operated semaphore signals at Belmont will be removed and replaced with two-and three-aspect colour light signals giving full colour light signalling between Knaresborough and Harrogate.

Additionally, the Starbeck annunciator will be abolished, and track circuits will also have their orientation amended.

Weaver to Liverpool – Implementation of line speed profile
A specific line speed profile for the West Coast Main Line between Weaver and Liverpool will be implemented in time for the summer 2008 timetable.

Initially, the signalling will be reviewed against current standards to identify any potential issues such as braking deficiencies or obscured signal sighting. Once the project has been scoped there is the potential for a variety of activities to be undertaken including civil, telecoms and power work for any signals that need to be moved.

This would be supplemented by further necessary works relating to power assessments and signalling for upgrades to Train Protection and Warning Systems, Automatic Warning Systems and robust train protection measures.
