Jarvis Rail has won one of Transport Scotland’s many enhancement projects with the award of the Mossend to Elgin contract. The work, along 270 miles of railway line, is designed to support the increase in rail freight from central Scotland to the north-east. Network Rail awarded Jarvis Rail the gauge enhancement contract following a rigorous tender process. While Transport Scotland is funding the implementation, Network Rail will manage the contract with Jarvis Rail. The contract announcement was made by Scottish Parliament’s Transport Minister Tavish Scott. Mr Scott said: “When completed the gauge enhancement work to be carried out by Jarvis Rail will bring benefits for the economy and the environment by encouraging many businesses to transport their freight by rail.” Jarvis Rail’s Managing Director for Scotland Raj Sinha said: “I am delighted that Jarvis Rail will be assisting Transport Scotland in its objective to develop the safest and most efficient rail line for the freight industry, as well as passenger services. “By winning one of Transport Scotland’s enhancement projects Jarvis Rail has the opportunity to demonstrate it has the locally-based skill and expertise to deliver the highest quality rail improvement works for Scotland. I look forward to working with Transport Scotland on this project and on future works.” The work is planned for completion in July 2007and the route will be cleared for larger containers by autumn 2007. The scope of work includes lowering and slewing of the track at 29 structures over 38 worksites to ensure the rail line has the capacity and height to carry large container traffic. Jarvis Rail’s Scotland team, which is located across the country, will complete the project at weekends and at night using a range of on-track machines supplied by Jarvis Rail’s sister company Fastline. Jarvis Rail and Fastline are subsidiaries of support services organisation, Jarvis plc.
