Jarvis Rail starts £5.5m Sheffield Brightside signal infrastructure project
27/04/2006
Jarvis Rail has started work on a £5.5m project, awarded by Network Rail, to renew the signalling infrastructure in the Sheffield Brightside Control area. The Brightside project includes the complete renewal of the signalling infrastructure in the Sheffield Brightside Control area during an 18 month period. Jarvis Rail’s Electrical Projects Group started site works on the contract in February 2006, working closely with Network Rail’s Major Projects and Investment team. Work will continue through to the main commissioning during the Christmas period, 2006, with minimal disruption expected. Jarvis Rail’s Electrical Projects Managing Director Stuart Birch said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this project as it is further recognition of the skill and expertise of Jarvis’ Electrical Projects Group.” “We will be working very closely with Network Rail to ensure that we deliver a safe, high quality and efficient solution that contributes to an optimised infrastructure of benefit to all rail users.” The Brightside signalling system controls the main railway lines out of Sheffield Station from the redundant Attercliffe Road Station to Wincobank Junction and on to Holmes Junction on the main line, and Ecclesfield West on the Barnsley branch. The existing Brightside interlocking still incorporates decommissioned signalling circuitry associated with the redundant Tinsley branch. The interlocking will be completely renewed to reflect the upgraded status of the reception line to allow passenger working, as well as other minor sidings re-modelling works. The interlocking control circuitry will comply with the latest standards. A ‘data logger’ will monitor the interlocking control circuitry, allowing on-site and remote incident investigation and fault-finding. The interlocking will be located within a purpose-built brick relay room incorporating an upgraded signalling power supply. Project Summary
- New free-wired interlocking
- New brick relay room, plus two new REBs
- New datalogger system
- New emergency operating panel
- New S2 TDM system between Sheffield PSB and Brightside
- Recovery of 4097A/B, 4086B and 4010A points
- Renewal and rationalization of 19 location cases
