Highways Agency’s confidence in HJS
27/02/2006
Herefordshire Jarvis Services (HJS) has won a Highways Agency contract worth about £99,000 to plant more than 5,500 shrubs and trees and replace 500 metres of fencing along the M42, south of Birmingham. The work at 39 sites between Junction 3a and Junction 7 on the M42 started on February 1 and will be completed by the end of March 2006. The contract is part of a new scheme introduced by the Highways Agency to cut congestion called ‘Active Traffic Management’. Drivers who use this stretch on the M42 may have already noticed brand new gantries, lighting, signing and emergency roadside telephones. The scheme makes use of variable speed limits to smooth the flow of traffic and will eventually allow motorists to use the hard shoulder as a running lane during busy periods, the first time this has been done in the UK. Active Traffic Management Project Delivery Sponsor Andy Kirk said: "This is the first time we have worked with Herefordshire Jarvis Services on a new build project. “Throughout the tender process we were very impressed with HJS’s managerial procedures such as health & safety, quality control and efficiency planning. We are therefore very confident that HJS will deliver a high quality product both on time and within budget, and are looking forward to working with them." HJS Highways Manager Mark Thomas said: “We are delighted to have won this contract, it is testament to the hard work of the team. “Following the initial clearing, planting and fencing work, the team will carry out a maintenance service along the hard shoulder and side roads, which could see the contract continue for the next three years.”
