Prismo is one of three major contractors selected to help spruce up Liverpool ready for the European Capital of Culture celebrations in 2008.Prismo, which is part of the Jarvis Group, has been appointed along with contractors Balfour Beatty and Kennedy, to carry out a wide range of highways-related works. The Agreement is currently valued at a total of £73 million over three years, with each of the contractors being selected for different projects during that time. “Framework Agreements are still in their infancy and for Jarvis to be selected for such a prestigious and high profile major contract at such an early stage is a major achievement,” says Jarvis Highways Managing Director John Worthington. “This is an innovative contract and we are one of the front runners, that is exactly where we should be,” he adds. “The contract allows us to develop relationships with the local community as well as the customer. As a priority, we will be building on the established joint training initiatives allowing potential employees within the City of Liverpool to improve their skills, not only for work over the next three years, but for their future careers. Similar, successful training schemes are being operated at several sites throughout the UK.” An experienced, dedicated Prismo team is being established to provide constant on-the-ground expertise, and Jarvis is the first of the three contractors to start work on time-critical projects in the city. Liverpool’s selection as European Capital of Culture 2008 – won in the face of fierce competition from Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Newcastle-Gateshead and Oxford – was announced last year. In total it will mean investment of about £2 billion, resulting in 1.7 million extra tourists visiting the city and spending an additional £50 million, and an estimated 14,000 new jobs. Plans for the city highlight the major regeneration taking place across Liverpool and the city’s track record in maintaining large scale capital projects. Announcing the award, Secretary of State Tessa Jowell, MP, said: “Becoming European Capital of Culture 2008 will accelerate the rebirth of Liverpool. The title will change Liverpool. It will transform the physical fabric of the city. It will grow its cultural capacity and regenerate its economy to deliver a lasting legacy.” Jarvis’s John Worthington says he is delighted that the company has been selected as one of the key partners in preparing Liverpool for this accolade. “Improvements to highways in the city and highways-related tasks are vital components in this programme of regeneration. We look forward to sharing our success with the people of Liverpool.”
