Jarvis secures two major contracts to the value of £154m

02/06/2004

Jarvis plc, the international facilities management and infrastructure services group, has reached financial close on two major contracts.

The first is to provide a new secondary school and public library for the London Borough of Croydon. The second – through its specialist student accommodation business, the University Partnerships Programme (UPP) - is to manage and operate the University of Plymouth’s Robbins and Gilwell halls of residence as well as entering into a first of its kind development partnership which will assess, plan and then develop and operate the university’s future accommodation requirements.

Under the partnership agreement with the London Borough of Croydon, Jarvis will create the Ashburton Learning Village by replacing the existing Ashburton Community School with a new landmark three-storey secondary school for 1200 pupils, and incorporating a new Ashburton Public Library.
The total development cost of the project is £25m. The project is expected to have a whole life value to Jarvis of £66 million. Work is scheduled to begin in June 2004 for completion in December 2005.

Jarvis will provide a full range of facilities management (FM) services for the school, library and nursery for a 30-year period commencing on completion of the construction phase.

At the same time, UPP has entered into a partnership agreement with Plymouth University: Under the Robbins and Gilwell estate transfer scheme, UPP will begin a long-term contract for the management and operation of those residences in the summer of 2004. These residences between them currently house nearly 640 students and this element of the project is expected to have a whole life value of £87.06m over 35 years.

Under the landmark, new development partnership, UPP will work together with the University of Plymouth to assess and plan the University’s accommodation requirements. It is currently estimated that this could involve the development of a further 2,000 study bedrooms and other student facilities in Plymouth. This will be centred mainly on the Plymouth campus, but is also expected to include the modernisation and expansion of the accommodation on the Hasledene campus in Exmouth next year.

UPP has been in partnership with the University of Plymouth since 1999 and has already successfully delivered two new halls of residence, Pilgrim and Radnor which, between them, accommodate 645 students and are operated by UPP on a 30-year contract.
