Prismo’s Colourbright in finals of Intertraffic 2004 Innovation Award

18/02/2004

Colourbright, the highly reflective surface treatment from Prismo, is the only UK nomination in the finals of the Intertraffic 2004 Innovation Awards.

Colourbright is a specially developed coloured surfacing that reflects the white lights of headlights back to the driver in strong, highly visible colours. Prismo has developed it from Clusterbead technology, where powerful reflectors are embedded in the coloured surfacing. The colour is enhanced because Clusterbead reflectors are available in a range of different colours to suit individual applications.

Colourbright is one of a final ten products nominated for the award, with others being entered from Germany, France, the Netherlands, Austria and Portugal. Intertraffic Amsterdam is recognised as one of the leading European events for the highways industry.

The main criteria, which will be re-examined at presentations during the event at the end of March, include technological improvement, design and efficiency, whilst other factors, such as ease of application, the contribution the product makes to a safer environment, and practical feasibility, are also considered.

Primarily designed for traffic calming and delineation of roadways and carriageways, Colourbright is the ideal solution for unlit roads where coloured surfaces – clear and bright during daylight hours – are much less visible in the dark.

Prismo’s development of Colourbright, using Clusterbead technology, enables road engineers and specifiers to plan improved safety schemes on roads where there is no lighting or where night visibility is poor. It will provide early warning of a wide range of hazards, including accident danger zones, gateways and obstructions, cycle paths and other potentially high risk elements.

"The prime purpose in developing Colourbright was to improve road safety,” says Colin Kirkwood, Business Development Director of Prismo. “Research has shown that 50% of all road accidents happen at night and in wet conditions, and yet only 10% of the time is it actually wet. What is needed is improved visibility for the driver, and Clusterbead is the ideal solution.

“The Colourbright product and Clusterbead reflective surface technology are major leaps forward for road safety throughout the world at a time when much greater emphasis is being placed on best value and safety for pedestrians and road users.”
