Local technology companies unite to compete nationally

22/01/2004

York based technology companies are working together to win national contracts. Agilisys, a leading technology and business process services company, has gathered together several highly innovative and creative local companies to take their offerings to the national market.

York Data Services, Salamander and Cybula are all specialists in their respective technological fields. Pooling resources enables them to compete at a higher level. Charles Mindenhall, CEO of Agilisys, assembled the group because, as he says, it makes business good sense. ‘We all share a commitment to innovation, and to transforming the way organisations do business, and we offer complementary solutions and services.’

Large technology projects are so complex that they create an uneven playing field where giant multinationals have the competitive advantage. Unfortunately, it makes commercial sense for these global entities to push their one-size-fits-all products, which may not be the most suitable or cost effective. Worse, these companies stifle innovation.

Smaller companies can offer more innovative and customised solutions, ones that often deliver better value for money too. Individually they risk being overshadowed in the marketplace. United, they form a distinctive and competitive offering.

Mark Fordyce, chairman of York Data Services reinforced this, adding, ‘It’s a great way of stimulating the local economy and bringing jobs to York, and an excellent opportunity to showcase local talent.’ York Data Services specialises in the delivery of high performance connectivity, networking and data centre solutions to businesses of all sizes, the company has won the contract to supply and manage IT services including high capacity fibre connectivity and gigabyte Local Area Network to companies within the IT Centre, a 35,000sqf development on York Science Park over 3 years.

Salamander has developed a range of award-winning technologies in the area of business architecture, knowledge mapping and performance management. One of the company’s Managing Partners, Dick Whittington said, ‘We work nationally with a range of public and private organisations deploying our MooD Transformation Toolset to address a range of high-profile business requirements. Partnering is key to our strategy, and we are delighted that Agilisys is now committed to taking our products to market. Participating in such initiatives keeps us innovative.’

Cybula develops high performance pattern recognition solutions and already works in close partnership with the Advanced Computer Architecture Group in the Department of Computer Science at the University as well as other blue chip organisations such as Rolls Royce and Sun Microsystems. ‘We recognise the value that partnerships offer.’ said Professor Jim Austin, Cybula’s Founder and CEO. ‘For smaller organisations, being part of a high quality partnership, and playing on a national stage, helps to raise our profile while maintaining our edge as a responsive and innovative technology company.’
